Analytical balances are high precision (to fractions of a mg), relatively delicate instruments, usually with comparatively limited weighing limits. They are designed to counter buoyancy effects allowing the determination of light samples.

Your water-filled flask would weigh about 3-4 orders of magnitude than the precision afforded by an analytical balance and so would likely damage the weighing mechanism. The density of the lab gas is much less than water so this wasn't a likely scenario witht the analytical balance. The centigram balance provides a more appropriate degree of precision and weighing limit for a 50 mL water-filled flask for use in your particular experiment.
