Our lab inherited a small Beckman centrifuge but it doesn't have an option for adjusting the speed. After looking in the manual, it seems we can purchase an Accessory that will tell us. But is there any way to tell what speed it is set at without buying the accessory?

Borrow a strobe tachometer that flashes a light many times a second. Draw a line on the spinning part. The strobe will have an adjustment for speed and you can bring the image to a stop following the directions and get the speed.
There are mechanical tachometers that require access to the end of the shaft, which you may not easily have with the centrifuge.
You used to be able to buy bands of stick on bars that work with a small neon light to give surface speed and calculated rpm from diameter, but they may not be on the market any more.
