I want to start off by stating that I am a regular guy who has Macular Degeneration.  Who is going on 8 years with this illness.  I am in my seventies now.

I will tell you a short story of my life with the beginning some eight years ago.  I went in for a regular eye appointment (have worn eyeglasses sense I was 24).  I knew I was due for a stronger pair of glasses as I was not seeing as well.  They gave me the eye drops and in about ½ hour, I was sitting in the chair preparing for the eye chart.  They turned off the lights and I put the eye patch over my left eye and read down as far as I could.  Then they switched eyes and they told me to start reading but all I could see was the light around the chart but not any letters.  Needless to say I was both shocked and alarmed—No vision in my left eye at that point and I did not even know.  My right eye had taken over my vision without suspect.

After the exam, they told me I had Macular Degeneration and that there was no cure.  They also said I had it in both eyes.

I ask them (eye doctor) what was going to happen and he told me that I would go blind.  I ask him how long, and he said he could not answer that as everybody in different ways.  He gave me a folder on Macular Degeneration, a new pair of glasses and set an appointment in three months so that they could monitor me.

I decided to consult a different doctor, one who’s field was in Macular Degeneration and I was glad that I did because I found out that I had Dry Macular Degeneration and tho they had no treatment for Dry, I would not go completely blind.  I would always be able to see out of the side of my eyes.  This was quite a relief.  He also gave me a sample of eye vitimens

And told me to try them.  Taking these eye vitemens over the past six years as brought some sight back to my left eye and really slowed the advance of

This problem.  I am considered legally blind but I can still see everything looking straight ahead for which I am thankful for.

I am an x-army vet who was over in Korea so I qualified to go to one of the rehab centers for training.  I went to the Southwest Rehab. Cent in Tucson, AZ. for 5 weeks.  This is a veteran program.  There they gave me an eye exam like no other, fitted me with several different type of glasses—regular glass but tinted yellow, a stronger pair for close up reading and mini binoculars mounted on eye glass frames for watching TV.

I also received a software program called Zoom-tex that when loaded in a computer enables me to enlarge what’s on the screen, up to 8 times.

They gave me a hand-held magnifier that has a lead light for taking with me when out and about and a super machine called CCTV.  This is a state of the art machine that has a projector that has controls where you can magnify what you have on the tray and this project it to a regular 19”TV sitting above it.  I use this everyday to read when ever I need to read.

Now, that is enough so let me get to the questions I listed above in the order I listed them.

1. Macular Degeneration is a desease that manly effects the older generation.  It is an attack on your vision.  There is both wet and dry degeneration.  Wet is the most serious as a person can go completely blind if left untreated. The good news is that they can treat wet macular by injections into the eye and by laser treatment and can stop the advance that way.  Dry has no treatment as such but a person does always have some vision but low vision.  The good news here is that eye viatmens can slow the progress to a very slow crawl.
2. Who is at risk is a question they do not have a final answer to as yet but they have found that you are at a greater risk if one of your parents had the desease.  Other than that, if you wear eyeglasses you are at a risk.
3. Can it be cured-Not at this time.  Wet Macular Degeneration can be stopped by laser of injections.  Dry, can be almost stopped by eye vitimens.
4. Treatment.  This has been covered above.  They are working to come up with a computer chip that will be placed at the back of your eye which will shoot what you see to this chip and the chip will relay this message to the brain.  This may never come to pass.
5. Options.  For Wet Macular, get a laser treatment or eye injections to stop what is going on.  Consult your eye doctor for his advice.  For Dry, I suggest you start taking eye vitimans ASAP.

My parting comment:  My last eye appointment(3 months ago(), I always ask if there is anything new.  He said to take “fish oil suplaments” in addition to my eye pills which I need to take until I pass on or until they make a breakthrough.

PS: What I disclosed above is what I have learned and experienced through the years living with Macularr Degeneration and what has worked for me and everyone is different in their makup.  The only thing I know is tat eye vitimines are the key plus one or two suppliments.
