Do blood bank telemarketers stretch the truth? I received a call from the blood bank asking me to donate. They said someone with my blood type is about to have liver surgery, which normally requires 6-10 pints of blood. They want me to donate because they'll be low on my type after the surgery. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with blood bank telemarketing techniques? Of course I want to help out, but this is a private (for profit) blood bank, and the whole thing felt a bit scam-ish.
That actually does sound like a right amount of blood needed for surgery. As a leukemia patient, I have spent a lot of time in the hospital and received more units and blood and platelets than I could even count over the last 3 years. I do know that the 2 hospitals I am treated at only have enough blood on hand to last about 2 days on average with just regular patients. They dont have anywhere near enough to cover patients if there were to be a major event. I had several of the nurses tell me that they will even run out if there is just a bad car accident with several trauma patients in the emergency room. Blood really honestly is in very short supply. Please please please, if you are medically able to donate, please do so. I would prefer to go to the Red Cross or the local hospital, but please donate.
