Hey guys, So when I play scales I get the whole 1234567123etc but like lets say I play a random note im not sure which note it is, like lets say i pay a c major scale i can count up 1,2,3,4etc but then lets say I play a random note im not sure which note it is and which number it is? Yes it is easier to figure out what scale degree you are on by counting up the scale... But in time you will not be dependent on counting the notes you will just know that when you land on E you are a third away from C.

Also if you want your knowledge to be complete knowing that you landed on the 3rd is not enough, you need to know if that third is a Major or Minor 3rd away from the root note. In the case above it would be a Major third...

To start with learn what a min 2nd and Maj 2nd interval looks like on you instrument. Then learn minor 3rd and Major 3rd.. and so on all the way up past an octave. This is not something that will just come over night expect it to take a few weeks to sink in.
