How do I clean odors from a refrigerator/freezer?

Not long ago, our garage refrigerator came unplugged without us knowing it, and a week later we discovered it. All the meat in the freezer had spoiled and now the whole thing has that odor. Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Remember when we used to use the charcoal for bbq's? Not the shaped brickettes, but the real charcoal, in different sizes and it was very light in weight?
Buy a bag and put about half of it in a bowl in the fridge or freezer or both - the smell will be gone in 24 hours.
We swapped a freezer with someone and their's smelled terribly - we did this with the lump charcoal and it worked....
