how can you identify unknown radioisotopes in a substance?

at work we use 18F. we get it from radioactive water. it is passed through a seppak and the waste is 18O. however when this 18O is analyzed with a gamma counter there are several other peaks in front of it. how can i identify these? the gamma counter requires standards and for one to know what is in the solution. is there a device that measures unknown samples?

The gamma counters I am familiar with have computerized libraries that look at the spectra from the detectors and are able to pick out the gamma spectra of unknowns. Those spectra were obtained from known standards, so it is like they are built in. You can calibrate vs. other knowns to make sure the instrument is working properly, and can then count the unkowns. I have also identified peaks manually (many years ago) by looking at a hard copy library of gamma spectra and matching them to the detector's spectra, a labor intensive process.
