What is he difference between a modem and a gateway?!?
ok u c i just got a wireless gateway and from wut i understand a gateway has a router and a modem all in one....so when i connect it i just plug my phone line to my gateway and configure it and then it works, or do i need to buy a modem...plz HELP
Whoops, I've revised my answer ("brett_86" is correct):
What brand is it? Apple Airport product line, for example, is just a router, not a modem.

Modem: converts the signal from the Cable/DSL line (that your internet provider installed in your house) into something your computer can understand.
Router: is a device that allows multiple computers to connect to a internet connection that was set up to give access to only one machine.
Gateway: combines both. (Eg.: your TV cable goes into the back, and multiple computers connect via Ethernet cables to the front)

One thing that is important here: all major residential internet providers only set up their internet service to allow ONE computer to connect at a time. That's why you want the router - then you can use more than one computer. So if your gateway has a TV-style coaxial port (and you subscribe to cable) or if your gateway has an telephone-style RJ11 port (and you subscribe to DSL) then you have everything you need.
