What is Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke is a form of hyperthermia (abnormally elevated body temperature) with accompanying physical and neurological symptoms. Unlike heat cramps and heat exhaustion, two less-severe forms of hyperthermia, heat stroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not properly and promptly treated.

People most at risk of heat stroke. Anyone can suffer from heat stroke, but those most at risk are:
·    People over 65 years, particularly those living alone or without air-conditioning
·    Babies and young children
·    Pregnant and nursing mothers
·    People who are physically unwell, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
·    People on medications for mental illness.

Types of Heat Strokes?
There are two main types of heat stroke: external and classic

Exertional heat stroke
People who have exertional heat stroke are usually people who are exercising in excessively warm conditions.
Classic heat stroke
People with classic heat stroke are usually elderly, very young (infants and toddlers) or debilitated people who are in warm environments for too long. The elderly are especially vulnerable to the heat.

What are heat exhaustion and heatstroke?
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body cannot lose heat fast enough. If not treated quickly, it can lead to heatstroke which is a

much more dangerous condition.
The signs of heat exhaustion include:
·    feeling faint,
·    dizziness,
·    rapid heartbeat,
·    nausea,
·    headache,
·    low blood pressure,
·    tiredness,
·    confusion,
·    loss of appetite, and
·    general discomfort

·  What to Watch For
·  Noisy breathing that may indicate upper airway obstruction
·  Excessive panting
·  Bright red mucous membranes (gums, conjunctiva of the eyes)
·  Weakness
·  Collapse
·  Coma
·  Altered mentation
·  Petechiae (pinpoint hemorrhages on the gums and/or skin)

How long will the effects last?
Heatstroke is a very serious problem. Depending on your general health and age, the effects can last as long as a day or two. The fever and disturbance of body temperature should be treated as soon as discovered.
People with true heatstroke will need to be hospitalized in most cases.

Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke Treatment
Self-Care at Home
Home care is appropriate for mild forms of heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and an ambulance should be called immediately.

·    For mild cases of heat exhaustion
o    Rest in a cool shaded area.
o    Give cool fluids such as water or sports drinks (that will replace the salt that has been lost). Salty snacks are appropriate as tolerated.

Prevention
Any pet that cannot cool himself off is at risk for heatstroke. Following these guidelines can help prevent serious problems.
·    Keep pets with predisposing conditions like heart disease, obesity, older age, or breathing problems cool and in the shade.

Even normal activity for these pets can be harmful.
·    Provide access to water at all times.
·    Do not leave your pet in a hot parked car even if you're in the shade or will only be gone a short time. The temperature

inside a parked car can quickly reach up to140 degrees.
