What are some lower cost substites for stainless steel?

for larger structural parts. by large i mean a tube that is 15 inch dia four feet long.
I should have specifid some other details, this is for a machine part so wood is out of the question. We have been using steel that is coated for a while but had to stop as rust in any amout is unacceptable, and they inevitably do rust do to the abrasive and corrosive nature of the application. Weeve been using stainless to solve this problem, and it works nicely however it is extremely expensive. This pipe supports a vibrating load radially. I was thinking about using something like a composite material or something that is more high tech. Does anyone have any experiance with this type of thing or can point me to a website. It must hold the equivilant weight, be food grade type of material, and be able to with stand rigidly strong prolonged vibration. Any Ideas?

Normally stainless steel is used in corrosive environements. So maybe steel, which has the same strength would do, with a good primer and paint coating.

Composite is a good idea but you asked for lower cost substitute, which it probably wont be.

Could you use a plastic tube? there are some pretty tough plastics like Ertalyte or Nylatron.
