Is this accuracy or precision?

We are doing a lab where we take an object and measure it with 5 scales. For example, weighing an eraser with 5 beam balances. We are trying to find uncertainty. All the answers we get are very close to each other with a difference of .1 or .2 Are we measuring precision or accuracy?

You are measuring ACCURACY.

This is a very important distinction, and many people don't understand it. (Like certain other YA posters who shall remain nameless!)

Let's take an example:

If you are trying to find out what country John Doe is currently in, someone might tell you he's in Japan, because they just saw him there yesterday.

This answer is as PRECISE as your question. That is, you wanted to know what country he's in. You don't CARE what city, just what country. Your required level of precision is COUNTRY.

Now, it happens that John Doe is actually in GERMANY. The person was WRONG. Or to put it another way, their answer was not ACCURATE.

See the difference? PRECISION has to do with how fine a measurement is being taken (or required). Miles? Feet? Inches? Millimeters? These are levels of PRECISON.

An answer can be of the correct precision, but still be inaccurate. OR, an answer can be accurate, but not precise. How?

Let's go back to our example. You want to know what CITY John is in, and the answer is, "I'm not sure, but he's in Germany somewhere." If John is in Berlin, then the answer is ACCURATE, but it's not PRECISE.

But suppose the answer is, "He's sitting at the writing desk in room 456 at the Hilton Hotel at 123 Anywhere Street, Chicago, Illinois, USA.".

THIS answer is VERY precise! But it's INACCURATE!

In the case of your balance beams, you have an imperfect instrument, being used by (sad but true!) imperfect human beings. Therefore, the answers are not PERFECTLY accurate. There will be some variation. However, all of the balance beams have EQUAL PRECISION. That is, they are all capable of measuring to the nearest tenth of a gram ( or whatever your beams' precision is).
