Canned dog food versus dry kibble is an argument that has been going on for sometime now – or at least ever since commercially manufactured and artificially packed into aesthetic looking bags kind of goodies seemed to hit grocery stores that are haunted by dog-owners in the flurry of discovering the worth of the variety they buy for Fido! On the practical side of course, the prohibitive price tag of most tinned dog chow brands can be a deciding factor for dog-owners choosing kibble as canned food may not be affordable on a regular basis for the bigger breeds.

Of course, the benefits of large chunks of real meat with lesser additives that is filling and nutritious cannot be overlooked in canned dog food; also it is something that that appeals to their basic carnivorous nature that canned dog food is typically readily accepted and relished by all but the picky eater variety of dogs, so is good for maintaining good health, is moist therefore easy to chew and less hassle-free for the dog-owner too.

Now, coming to dry kibble – since it is dry and hard, with lesser moister than canned dog food, it benefits the oral hygiene by preventing tartar and plaque problems; it also does not need to be put in the fridge after opening like canned food requires so is easy to store and carry on journeys, therefore proves to be economical, convenient and a healthy diet option for your dog.

Of course, the last choice for which is better is best made by your dog's vet and – Fido himself, so choose quality and good health will automatically follow whether you choose to go with kibble or canned!

Pregnant dog, need some advice?

The other day i came across a stray lab that's pregnant. I decided to take her in, but I have always had my dogs fixed so I'm not completely sure how to prepare her for pregnancy. Shes barely showing and is developing teets, or milk however you want to call it. I do not currently have the money for a vet bill, but im setting aside money to take her within the next month. Does anyone have helpful information for me? Preferably a professional breeder even though these are likely mixed breeds pups.

I will have the money, in a month. I dont keep a savings account for when i find a stray. This was a last minute decision and i refuse to let her or the pups be put to sleep and will do my best to find homes for the pups.

Unless there are complications, dogs pretty much don't need much help to have the puppies. Feed her good food, like you already are doing. Give her a blanket to lay on. When she is due, she will make a nest for her pups. Tear up some newspapers, or rags, and she will use these the way she wants them. Do take her to the Vets, when you can, to get her checked over for any ailments. Give her lots to drink. Ask the Vet if she should have milk to help her produce more, or if water is just as good. When the pups are born, she will rip off the sack. If she needs help, you can tear the sack off the pups yourself. Hold the pups in both hands, upside down, and gently, in a back and forth motion, shake the pup to get the fluid out of it's lungs. Wipe the pup off with a clean cloth, or paper towel, briskly to urge the pup to breathe, and put on a heating pad (covered with a towel, at least), while you see if the mother needs any more help. Make sure the heating pad is not hot. After they are born, take the mother and pups to the Vets for a check up. Since you don't know when she got pregnant, you don't know when they will be born. It takes nine weeks. Perhaps, the Vet can give you a good idea when to expect the births. Also, if you have any other dogs or pets, keep them away from her when she is due to give birth, and away from her pups, to keep her calm. Best of luck to you!
