Muslim colleague don't touch beer and wine, but works with 70% ethanol in the laboratory? ?

I have this Muslim lady working in our biotech lab and she uses 70% ethanol daily to clean and sanitise her work bench (she uses gloves). However she doesn't want to go to our end-of-year function, because they serve alcoholic drinks at the restuarant!!! Can you get more anti-social than that? When I ask about it she only keep saying it is against her religion. She only uses the ethanol in lab because it is lab protocol.
I mean she didn't want to go to end-of-year function. It was November 2008.
I don't want to antagonize her beliefs. I just want to understand it. The fact that she doesn't even want to be in an area where alcohol is served is strange (not even talking about drinking it). Beer has 5% ethanol and wine 12 -14 % ethanol. Just want to UNDERSTAND it not criticize it.

I understand why you are confused, but put yourself in her position.
There maybe MANY reasons she doesn't want to go.

It could be because everyone will be drinking and she doesn't want to be around a bunch of drunk men/women, she may feel uncomfortable or awkward, isolated.

Obviously, someone may comment on the fact that she is not drinking and might say insulting things to her especially under the influence of alcohol.

Maybe she is married, and so her partner maybe the one who is not comfortable with her going.

Muslim women are also advised not to mix socially with males as this usually leads to other things more intimate.

If she did go maybe she would be pressurised to drinking, not that I think she would, but it would be very uncomfortable for her.

The fact that she works with it does not mean anything, I think her reasons are probably one of the first few.
