Enjoying the Benefits of Low Voltage Landscape Lights

Low voltage landscape lights are more popular these days as many people would like to extend the use of their yards aside from being a garden but also hold parties during the night.

Low voltage landscape lights make the front porch safer and undeniably more attractive. It may be done in many forms such as installing path lights, deck lights, floodlights, patio lanterns or just the landscape lights. What makes this type of lights the number one choice for homeowners is because it is more practical than high voltage lights. Both offer the same quality lighting only that the low voltage is much more safe and cost-effective. It utilizes a transformer, which reduces the 120 volts house or business current to 12 volts. They offer the same quality lighting only that it has lower risk and energy consumption.

Why would homeowners need to install low voltage landscape lights? Aside from the fact that lights provide better visibility during the night, they also help create a much safer environment. Well they don’t actually prevent crimes from happening but they lessen the possibilities of your house being an easy target for thieves. By providing an even illumination rather than dark shadows at night, they guide your and your guest’s path. When you drive to your garage, you will not be blinded by the glare produced by high voltage lights.

Low voltage landscape lights help improve the over-all appearance of your property. They enhance and accentuate the shapes and textures of your landscape and its structure. You and your family could take pride of a more comfortable and beautiful property.

Low voltage landscape lights are much simpler to install than the high voltage ones. Homeowners could even exercise some creativity while planning for the installation of the fixtures. It’s so economical because they are cheaper to install, to maintain and the energy they consumer are lower than the high voltage lights. You can’t help but feel confident about your choice that it is both economical and beneficial from its features for your landscape lighting options.

please can you help with xmas light bulb voltages?

hi there

we have a line of old xmas light decorations, there are 24 in total and they are wired straight into a plug, no transformers or nothing - our mains supply in the uk is 240v

from what we can see the originals are "20v 3w" but aren't very bright, we think they've got like this over the [50+] years use although not to sure because of the voltages concerned

now all we can find down our local hardware store is "34v 3w" but this would total 816v and as i said they are just going into the mains

what would be the end result, will they be able to light up fully and will they just draw the extra from the mains supply, or will they all be dim because with the available voltage there's not enough to supply the full wattage to each, perhaps this is why what's in there is dim?

also any suggestions on alternative bulbs, places to buy or a "stepup transformer" ! is it ?

many thanks

merry xmas

regards

jack r

it depends if they are in series or parallel, but they are probably in series

Power = VI = V^2 / R

R = V^2 / Power

so the new bulbs are

R = 34^2 / 3 = 385ohms

so with 24 you'd get 24 x 385 = 9240 ohms

so at 240V

i = 240 / 9240 = .026A

power per bulb = I^2 R = .026^2 x 385 = .26W

so they would go to less than 1/10 power

I wouldn't recommend stepping up the voltage, the insulation might not be up to it, and a higher industrial voltage could be dangerous from the point of view of fire or electrocution.
