Is the indicator light on a USB drive supposed to go out?

After "ejecting" a USB drive, is the indicator light supposed to go out? On my particular computer, a USB drive light will remain on, even if you do eject it. I figured this was normal, as, by my understanding, the light only indicates power to the drive (solid) and data transfer (blinking). I would assume the light would only go out if power to the USB port died (which would be a bad thing). A friend, however, assures me that the LED *should* go out after you eject the drive, and is trying to tell me there is something wrong with my computer (I think he just has a beef with Macs)
