About the Author Could any American please explain the "grid" system of mapping US cities, & sizes of city blocks, etc.? Is this a standard system applied throughout the USA? What size is a "lot", or a "block"? How does the grid system work where nature doesn't co-operate (rivers, hillsides, etc)?
There isn't really a "standard system" and accomdations for things like rivers & hillsides were simply made at the time. Many American cities had to re-number their street grids in the late 19th or early 20th centuries to account for growth. An example is: http://nutrias.org/~nopl/info/louinfo/numberchanges/numberchanges.htm There is a good explanation of the basic idea behind a standard grid on: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?CityBlock However, the aritcle clearly points out "Each city block is just as big as it is. They aren't even all the same shape." Good luck! ICOM North America Propane System of Automotive Aftermarket Thanks for visiting!
