Depends on the size. "Dry cell" is a pretty vague term and could apply to any number of different battery types. I'll assume alkaline cell.

Short circuit current is not a number manufacturers list, but it is determined by the internal resistance of the cell.. I could find one reference that pegs the AAA at about 0.2 ohms, which means the short circuit current is about 7 amps. Other sizes would go up in proportion, with a D cell at 150 amps.

9 volt battery I'd guess at about 1 amp, as it is usually 6 AAA cells, and 6 volt lantern, which is usually 4 D cells at 40 amps.

These numbers go down as the battery charge goes down.
