How do aquarium powerheads work?

I am putting together a 72 gallon aquarium and am looking into some powerheads.. I am thinking about the Maxi-Jet brand. My question is, do you just take the powerhead out of the box and stick it somewhere inside the tank? Are there any hoses or plumbing required? IS there air mixed in with the water to help oxygenate the water? Or does it just suck water from one hole and shoot it out the other? In that case, won't it blast sand and gravel all over the place?
