Excellent Viewpoints at Windermere
At the mid point of Lake Windermere lies Bowness on Windermere, with Ambleside at the northern tip and Newby Bridge at the southern end. Bowness on Windermere became a popular resort.
The high ground in the Bowness on Windermere provides several excellent viewpoints such as Orrest Head and Post Knott from which to take in the breath taking scenery which has changed little since Victorian times.
Visitors can arrive by train or coach and there are plenty of taxis and self drive cars which can be rented. Frequent buses serve from Ambleside, Grasmere, Kendal and Keswick . The railway station at Windermere town is about one mile away.
The Lake Windermere is twelve miles long, one mile wide and two hundred and twenty feet deep. It is the largest natural lake in England, and is fed by numerous rivers. Its shores are littered with wonderful scenery, walks and picturesque towns and villages. Until March 2005 Windermere was the only lake without a speed limit, but a ten mph limit has now been imposed.
At the southern end is Lakeside Pier, and Lakeside Station of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, and also the Aquarium of the Lakes.
All of the west shoreline, but very little of the east, is owned by the National Trust. The Trust also owns Fellfoot Park at the southern end of the lake.
In the late 19th century, wealthy businessmen from Lancashire built grand mansions overlooking the lake, and many of these have now been converted to hotels, such as the Langdale Chase Hotel, and the Belsfield Hotel.
Exhibition on the life of Beatrix Potter and the animal characters depicted in her childrens books is situated here.
Fell Foot Park and Garden is a restored Victorian garden and park covering seven hectares at the southern end of Windermere lake close to Newby Bridge in the care of the National Trust.
Windermere Steamboat Museum holds a fine collection of Victorian and Edwardian steamboats built for use on Windermere.
Octopus, rays, sharks, fish, ducks, otters , frogs and microscopic aquatic life all displayed imaginatively at the Aquarium.
It has many shops offering a variety of quality goods, numerous restaurants, a cinema and theatre.
An attractive location and now a popular venue for weddings, parties and other special celebrations as well as for a relaxing vacation.
A popular holiday resort that people come back to again and again. Best times to visit are during the summer months May to September.

Where can I get top quality .975 eyepieces?
I've got an excellent laboratory-grade Lumiscope microscope from the 1960s that takes .075 eyepieces. Does anyone know a source of top notch eyepieces in this size? I am aware that any telescope of quality now uses a 1.25 or larger eyepiece, so I'm finding my usual sources are no good. Basically I'm looking for a fully multi-coated plossl or something. Does it exist?
Ask this question directly to Carl Zeiss GHMB, Zeiss Jena, Asahi Optical, Bausch & lomb, Nikon, Asahi, etc. and any other large optics, lens telescope, and even microscope manufacturers . Ask them for leads and at least one of them (probably many), will respnd with sources. Don't be shy. Most commercial companies will go miles for a person that is interested in their manufacturing area.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Doc. Dan.
