The Picture Framing Process: Mounting Tissue
Mounting tissue, which is also known as tissue mount or hinging tissue, is used to attach artwork to the mount board, or alternatively, to connect the mat board to the mount board. Mounting tissue is one of the supplies that you will need for framing your fine art photographs.
Tissue mount is a dry mount product. Unlike certain gummed hinging tapes, which need water applied to the tape to activate the adhesive, dry mount tissue needs no water in order to work. This is an important consideration when using it with photographs, because photos do not usually take kindly to coming into contact with water. It tends to discolor and damage the surface of the photo.
Quality photo mounting tissue is dry mount, and very easy to use. Tissue mount is self-adhesive, and you simply cut off the length that you need and press it to the surface to apply it.
Mounting tissue is a great product to use if you have a lightweight piece of artwork. With heavier hinging tape, the artwork could be damaged in the process of framing it, but not so with dry mount hinging tissue. It is an excellent solution when you want to use it in conjunction with photographs or translucent pieces of artwork.
You will also want to think about the type of artwork that you are framing. If you wish to preserve it for the long term, photo mounting tissue is the way to go because it comes in Ph neutral, as well as acid and lignin-free varieties. High Ph, as well as acids and lignins, can damage the surface of delicate photos, and thus products free of these harmful substances will go a long way toward preserving your quality photographs. Tissue mount is also non-yellowing for the same reason.
Lightweight hinging tissue is an excellent choice when you do not want the tissue to show in your framing application. Once it is pressed down and burnished, it will nearly disappear from sight.
Once you have put the artwork between the mat and mount boards, you will have to decide on the frame and glazing that will work best for your art project. Photographs are traditionally framed in sleek contemporary thin metal frames with wide white mat board to edge them. This helps to throw all the focus on the artwork within the frame. Paintings are often framed in wooden frames that are color coordinated along with the mat to enhance the look of the artwork. These are also easier to mix with more casual home decorating styles.
In relation to other framing components, mounting tissue is an inexpensive framing supply that you will want to use with many of your photo framing projects.
