Milkor MGL Development History

Milkor Ltd is still a privately held South African company, internationally renowned for its 40mm Multiple Grenade Launchers. Over the last twenty-eight years, Milkor has supplied higher than fifty thousand grenade launchers to law enforcement and military agencies in more than thirty nations around the globe from less-lethal to fatal weapons.

It is however the 40mm MGL (Multiple Grenade Launcher) that made the Milkor name famous. Though many have since tried to repeat the initial design, "There is still no replacement for the original" as the firm's slogan so justly puts it.

Presently in production is the second generation MGL Mark 1 (which enhanced the capabilities of the legendary Y2), as well as the 3rd generation MGL Mark 1S ( with 105mm chambers ), and MGL Mark 1L ( with longer chambers which can accommodate an even wider range of ammo including cargo rounds ). The Mark 1L is ideally designed for use by armed forces where its extreme versatility can can be used in a live combat or peacekeeping environment. The launcher cannot be incidentally discharged if dropped.

This weapon is a light, semi-automatic, low velocity, shoulder-fired forty mm grenade launcher with a six-round capacity and a progressively-rifled barrel. It involves the well-proven revolver principle that will deliver 40mm rounds to an effective range of 375m at a quick firing rate of six rounds in 3 seconds. A number of rounds like HE, HEAT, HEDP, anti-riot rod, irritant or pyrotechnic may be employed ; the cylinder can be loaded or unloaded rapidly.

Milkor furnishes its MGLs with adjustable occluded eye gunsights ( OEG ) which has been designed to ascertain the range to determine the range to the target and can be straight away adjusted in an appropriate way. It enables the user to extend the hit probability at ranges of at least 375 metres. The range quadrant is graduated in 25-metre increments, and the aim automatically compensates for drift. The occluded eye gunsight is a collimating sight providing a single aiming spot; the firer sights with both eyes open with the effect the targeting spot is superimposed on the target, with both target and spot in sharp focus. The collimating sight encompasses a radio-luminous lamp which supplies the spot contrast and which has a life of roughly ten years.

New needs lead to new innovations. The 40mm US-Mark four is a light-weight under-barrel Grenade Launcher with advance safety aspects which can be attached to any modern attack weapon. The 40mm US-Mark four may be used on any of the current mainline attack weapons like the R4-Galil, M16, AK47, G3 and SG540 ( with minor adjustments ), therefore enabling the user with a 40mm Grenade Launch capacity together with a 7,62mm or 5,7mm. Recently ongoing developments and new lightweight materials led to the manufacturing of the 40mm US-Mark 4S, which weighs a phenomenal 735g! This new weapon houses a specialised Picatinny interface with external Picatinny mounting, ideal for add-ons like laser lights or torches. Furthermore it includes a clip-on/clip-off mechanism for the Picatinny assembly, a built in safety on the trigger and a mechanism that cocks the weapon mechanically when loading.

The new Stopper Mark 2, and 37/38mm and 40mm Pistol Mark 2 shares logistics to the extent the application needed by the application required by the client will identify which barrel should be fitted, from 37/38 or 40mm smoothbore to the 40mm grooved fatal barrel. Stopper Mark 2 utilizes the same parts as the Pistol-family... The longer Stopper Mark 2 barrel offers longer distances and better accuracy. It also has a new butt-stock.

The Milkor solid state Sight concept (no moving parts ), with inserted gradients and reticule, covered with shock-resistant material. Recoil and powerful handling of weaponry in a battleground eventuality could cause havoc with standard reflex and optical plant. Milkor developed a completely new sight which not only addresses these aspects but will also provide a separate scale on the same sight for the medium range grenade launchers ( up to 800m. Milkor also now offers the new 40mm MRGL ( Medium Range Grenade Launcher ), a six shot launcher with improved firing mechanism, buttressed main frame, capable of firing medium range ammo that will reach up to 800m. This weapon is good for lightweight infantary fighting vehicles and security forces, fast attack Navy crafts and chopper application with the recoil system.

MILKOR additionally developed a vehicle and fixed mounting systems to accommodate their new release range, particularly suited for mounting on any vehicles and structures. This new concept is perfect for warships and patrol craft alike. The built -in recoil buffer system enables low interference on weapon systems, and it is perfectly fitted for boat and helicopter mountings as mentioned above.

Springfield Armory rifle scope for .308?

I have a CZ 550 Varmint Rifle in .308 and have mounted a Springfield Armory 6x40 scope with .308 rangefinding reticule. I haven't had much opportunity to fire the rifle since mounting this scope, so I don't have much knowledge of the quality of the scope. While reading some online reviews of this scope, I have encountered several opinions stating that it is an inferior scope and that much better optical equipment is available for the same price. If you have experience with this scope, I would love to know what you think of it. If there is something else that would be better suited to my CZ Varmint rifle, please make your recommendations. I am interested in using the rifle for the long range precision shooting.

Bound's hubby here:

When I purchased my M1A, I also purchased the SA 6x40 Government Model scope. I like the rangefinding / distance compensating recticle. I generally use my M1A in competition, using iron sights only, so I have not shot this scope much.

I find it is a quality scope. The one draw back, is that the range compensating recticle is calibrated using 168 grain Match loads (equivalent to Military Match M852). I prefer the heavier 173/175 grain Match loads (M118/M118LR) ... but for government work, the scope will put these rounds close enough to where I need to place them.

I would not rely on the range compesating recticle for long range precision though. That recticle will place the bullet on target, but not with pin-point precision! It is better to have a target quality scope and shoot it to establish zeroes at the distances you plan to shoot.

Good luck!
