Relation between the efficiency and output coupler transmittance ?

How the transmitivity/ reflectivity (T or R) percentage of output coupler affects the efficiency of the lasers ? Does it vary with the different laser materials ?

The efficiency is a measure of how much of the energy going into the gain medium becomes light coming out of the coupler. Energy going into the gain medium can be lost one of two ways: it can be radiated into some direction other than the laser cavity mode, or it can be successfully radiated into that mode but absorbed by something else before it escapes the laser. Remember that the power going into your gain medium is always exactly equal to the power coming out of your coupler PLUS any losses inside the cavity (due to lossy mirrors or energy radiating into the wrong path).

The higher reflectivity of your output coupler (lower transmittance), the more light will bounce around in your cavity before it gets out. That means you will have more light in the cavity, which will be more efficient at making the gain medium radiate into the proper laser cavity mode. So a higher reflectivity gives you more efficiency.

However, this can not go on for ever. Eventually there will be so much light power inside the cavity that the losses due to non-perfect mirrors or gas absorption will dominate and you will get no further gain in efficiency by increasing the coupler reflectivity, and you may even see a drop in efficiency.

But for low powers, an increase in output-coupler reflectivity (or a decrease in transmittance) will make your laser more efficient.
