A Possibly Contaminated Oven and Discolouration?
I have an Electrical Furnace oven.
I have heated a 316SS component to 260°C, as per a company guideline for that material, in preperation for a 'heat shrink fitting' procedure.
The thing is, I keep geting discoloured metal after heating. I am pretty sure the temperature contoller is calibrated ok.
I am wondering if an oven with contaminants in such as oil and grease would be 'in the air' during the heating of the component and give the discolouration?
Is that feasible?

You are probably seeing a film of oxide, which seems to be colored because of its thickness [think oil on water].
Try purging the oven with inert gas. Or just ignore the discoloration.
As you heat 316SS in air you will see
faint yellow tinge
brown
dark brown
blue/black
