Here are some quick pointers. One word of caution. Swimming can be hard on the neck...and the back. If you look forward it puts the neck in extreme flexion which can work it's way down the spine. The TI stuff is very good about teaching proper head position and rolling which will avoid this problem. There is a snorkel that is front mounted that might help too. I'm 25 years old and due to some lower back problems with a weakened muscle I was told by a physio that I should start swimming to strenghtin the muscle in my back.
I haven't swam properly (ie, doing lenghts) since I was about 13 or 14 and seem to have lost alot of the skill. Mainly the breathing and fitness.
I have only been back swimming a week now, going 4 times a week, and cannot do more than two lenghts (25m pool) without taking a break because I am out of breath. I find I cant control my breathing and exaling well when out of breath. I am doing about 20 lenghts in 25 minutes at the moment.
I wanted to know was this normal for someone getting back to swimming or a beginner even?
any help would be great.

1. Be sure to exhale completely underwater. You're probably holding your breath too much.
2. Breathe every stroke. You need to breath frequently.
3. Slow down the arms and relax.
4. Slow down the kick. TI technique is very good at teaching this, otherwise it can be difficult
5. Practice breathing by holding on to the wall. Take ten good breaths then swim a length working on breathing technique. Repeat.
6. Get some fins. They will make it easier to focus on breathing and technique and you'll be able to do more laps.
7. Roll your body to breathe...not turn your head.
It does take a while to get back into swimming and learning the breathing all over again. The fitness will come back too.
