how to design a timer circuit using 555 timer?

i want to turn off our water pump set automatically after 20 to 30 minutes i don't want to use any micro controller. is there any circuit which uses only 555 timer & relay.

The 555 timer is not very suitable for such a long time on its own. Using it with a counter it gives a precise result. If you get a data sheet it may help (first link below). There are many websites with information about using the 555 timer. It is probably one of the most popular devices ever for hobbyists.

One other idea that is very straight forward is a plug in 24 hour timer clock. These come as either digital or mechanical designs, and plug into the power outlet. They can be programmed by user settings to turn your pump on and off at various times. The mechanical variety using settings with pins may need 15 minutes minimum between adjacent settings. It seems unlikely you will make a suitable timer more cheaply than this unless you already have parts on hand.

Most of these designs presented by various answers as well as those on websites are capable of operating a relay, and require a 12V DC supply or similar. A small relay is not able to switch a pump on and off directly, but it provides an output capable of operating the pump control, which may be a contactor for switching the AC mains to the pump, or a motor starter etc. You will need an electrician to do that safely anyway. You will have to work out the details yourself, or learn more about things so you can. Excellent, the project will stimulate you to learn more and become an expert yourself.
