Rechargable batteries?

I bought a DURACELL Rechargable ACCU today, and tried to charge four AA DURACELL Rechargable Batteries. It says in the directions the charger's LED will turn red when the batteries need to be charged, and will shut off the LED when they're done charging. My camera says they need to be charged, but the charger begs to differ.
I put in the batteries, and plugged it in. No light was showing! I believe I did what the instructions said. Put in the batteries, plug some kind of plug, (Ahaah, I'm sorry I can't specify. I don't know what it's called.) and plug the other end of that into the wall.
What did I do wrong?

First, if the battery's are brand new, they have a very small charge in them and need charging. Re-check that they have been properly loaded into the charger with the positive[+] and negative[-] signs on the battery's matching what the charger calls for. make sure the outlet is powered up that you are plugging the charger into, some times they are on a wall switch and turned off, finally make sure their isn't an on/off switch on the charger that needs to be moved.......you should be set to go.
