Can the scales on the hair (cuticle) from a human be seen with a stereo microscope?

I'm working on an experiment and I was wondering if it was true if you can see the scales on your hair using a stereoscope.

The easiest way of seeing the scales, is to see a mold of the hair.

Take some clear nail polish.... and place a long "smear" of it on a glass slide. Wait till the nail polish is just dry to the touch. Place the hair on the nail polish, and apply another glass slide on top of it, pushing the hair into the polish. If you do it right, after a few minutes, you can remove the top slide (it should not stick to the nail polish if it was dry enough), and quickly but carefully remove the hair. You should clearly see the scale pattern in the groove that is left in the nail polish.... probably under a stereo microscope but a compound microscope would see the pattern better.

I'm trying to remember which nail polish works best.... the clear ones that are advertised as super hard (probably not), or the conventional polish.
