Red liquid a solution, oversaturated, or mechanical mixture?

A laboratory receives a bottle of red liquid for analysis. After it sits overnight, bits of the red powder are found on the bottom of the container. When lab technicians shine a light into the container, the top of the beam look pink, while the bottom appears red. Tiny particles are also observed in the beam of light. Does this bottle contain a solution? What clues indicate so? Please explain!

Sounds to me like an oversaturated solution of a red solute in the liquid. The clues supporting this are that over a very long time, red powder settles to the bottom, the top of the solution is not as red as the bottom, and a light passing through the liquids shows particles. That means that the red solute is slowly precipitation out of solution.

If this were a stable solution, the color would remain uniform and no particles would be observed. If this were a mechanical mixture, chances are that the solid would have settled more quickly than overnight.
