What someone may not be willing to pay cash for, they may be willing to trade for. Like in the example of the hotel, though they may pay for the room with trade, the room service, the valet and the numerous others ammenities they use in the hotel they pay cash at. Which is bringing more cash into the business than would have originally been there than if the room sat empty. These cash transactions of course help with the cash flow of the business and in turn help the business survive.

As you can see there are many benefits to barter, but this is just the start! There are many other ways trade can benefit a company or individual.

Isn't there a way to use surplus crops to feed the millions that are starving?

It just seems so wrong that there are surplus crops just going to waste when there are millions around the world that could benefit from this surplus. I just read this article(http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091127/ap_on_bi_ge/us_farm_scene_unpicked_apples) in which apples are going unused, and I have heard of instances in the past where tons of surplus wheat was dumped into the ocean.

There is a way but it would not be "cost wise" to do it because it will cost the companies more to ship it then it would be to dump it.
