Using vacuum pumps in series?
I have a rotary refrigerant compressor that I have been using for a vacuum pump. Recently, I got a real vacuum pump (one for recharging air conditioning systems). I was wondering if I can pull a stronger vacuum pump if I run the compressor until it pulls a full vacuum and then pull a vacuum on the output of the compressor (hooking them up in series)? The real vacuum pump is rated to pull to 75 microns, no idea about the compressor.
Most of the vacuum pumps for refrigeration are reciprocating, they make a better vacuum that the rotary compressor so using the proper pump you will get more warranty than from the rotary pump. If you use them in series your vacuum will increase but I don't see the purpose of it because a particle smaller than 75 microns won't harm anything in the circuit. I recommend you put the rotary in standby for emergency use or make yourself a nice air compressor and use the pump for what it was fabricated for.
