When Should You Bring The Dog To The Vet?

Being a responsible dog owner, it is just natural for one to ask when the dog should be taken to the vet aside from the routine check-ups. What would constitute a valid emergency trip to the vet? How can one assess if the dog really needs a veterinarian’s attention despite how he looks? Owners must be very aware of their dog itself. They must observe their healthy behavior and moods, how they feel to the touch, and even how they move. Owners should know their dogs better than anyone. Once something is noticeably off, owners can then be more attentive and critical when checking if there is indeed something wrong.

Here are some signals owners can check on their own before rushing the dog off to the vet: Pale gums usually indicate anemia, lack of iron, internal bleeding and even a flea infestation that may be sucking vital nutrients. Labored breathing is never a good sign especially if no strenuous activity was done. Dizziness or circling means that the dog may be having disorientation or may have suffered head trauma. Inability to get up or walk is a concern of physical weakness, bloated abdomen which could be associated with GDV, crying and whining due to pain, and body temperatures that exceed 104 degrees or fall under 99 degrees Fahrenheit. If the dog displays any of these signs, these definitely warrant an immediate trip to the veterinarian.

There are other signs that are not as urgent but also need close monitoring for it can lead to more serious health issues. Loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea can lead to the canine's loss of strength and weakness. Dehydration is a major problem if the dog hasn't taken any liquid for a whole day. Frequent urination can be indicators for canine diabetes, urinary tract infection or even bladder stones. Flaky skin may mean allergies due to certain foods or even an infection and anything to do with breathing such as wheezing is definitely something to observe. If the above signs last longer than 3 days, it is strongly recommended that the dogs be brought to the vet.

It is always good to have a good professional relationship with the dog's vet for they can tell owners over the phone how to look over the dog to verify if it is very sick. Just like a parent should be in touch with his or her children's pediatrician, so should an owner be with his dog's veterinarian.

I live in Austin, TX What is a good Vet to take my yorkie?

I have a toy yorkie. I just really want a vet who knows about this breed... or smaller dogs. Ive been to a clinic that i just wasn't satisfied with and its hard to get questions answered when know one professional knows about my breed! its aggravating! please help me out Austin!

I always took my dogs to the vet in Manchaca...not sure what area you live in but they are great...saved my dog's life once...I think its Manchaca Vet Clinic or something like that...its at the very West end of Manchaca.
